Despite the rain, 50 people attended the Beat SCAD Walk on 15 June at the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and Country Park. Patients, family members, friends and members of the Leicester research team braved the rain for an indoor picnic. And, just as we were thinking we’d have to cancel the walk, the sun came out, allowing it to go ahead.
After the walk, Dr David Adlam, UK SCAD research lead gave an update and answered questions from the audience.
He discussed the recent genetics research and said the findings about the 16 genes that confer a risk of SCAD is just the start of the journey researching genetics.
Further research projects include analysing DNA to discover more about the genetics; looking at female sex hormones and the menstrual cycle in relation to SCAD; a randomised clinical trial for HRT and SCAD; exercise/rehab for SCAD patients; and improving non-invasive diagnostic techniques.
Dr Anju John, Clinical Research Fellow, (pictured left with Dr Adlam) gave a brief outline of the focus of her research project, looking at female sex hormones and at HRT in relation to SCAD.
Dr Adlam answered questions from the audience about genetics, exercise, cardiac rehab, post-SCAD chest pain versus angina, post-SCAD fatigue, coronary artery spasms and more.
Thanks to everyone who attended the event, bought products from our Shop and donated money. You all made the event a great success.
Many thanks to Dr Adlam and Dr John, to research team members Jane Plume, Jay Moth and Vanessa Hollings and former Trustee Harriet Mulvaney for their help during the day, to former Trustee Karen Rockell and her husband Clive who led the walk, and to the team from Triskelle Pictures for filming the talk and taking photos of the event.
We will post a video of the talk once it’s been edited.
